Report No 10.........Secure the Shipwreck until after 10th August and The Rip event.
Report No 10.....to ISC CEO Tipi..........Bali Island...............Padang Padang Ship Wreck and Reef Clean Up
26rd July, 2008.....Saturday
Aim..........Secure the shipwreck until after the major ASP WCT surf contest. Then get rid of it in as eco-friendly way, as soon as possible. Contain the pollution.
6.30 am........... Load the now supposedly repaired pump with engine, and the inlet and outlet hoses, plus various other pieces of equipment into the car.
Stop to get gas and check the pumps motor oil. Chris starts the engine and gives it a test run. All seams fine.
Meet at the top of the cliff behind the Padang Padang back beach, with our hard working Role staff. Carry the heavy/dirty equipment down to the wreck.
Surf at Padang2 on the other side of the wrecks is 2-3 foot.
Haul the pump with its' petrel engine, the hoses and other equipment by rope, up the side of the 45 degree angled shipwreck and onto the deck.

Prime the pump and start the engine. All's cool and we are a pumpin' away for 30 odd minutes. Then the motor cuts out. Chris works on the engines and gets it started again for a while, but then it stops again. This time it would not respond to any of Chris's desperate attempts to get it to start up. We would need a new pump and engine. The engine on this pump obviously had major issues.
So the Role crew carted the pump with its engine and equipment, piece by piece, over the side back up the cliff, to the waiting car.
Before Chris left the wreck, he went around and tightened all the ropes holding the vessel, and the staff checked for any major rubbish that may become a threat to the environment or the line up. Chris and the team probably managed to pump 2-3 tons of water into the freezer compartments. Any extra weight was good value, and would help secure the vessel throughout the surfing event, especially if a strong swell jacked up.

Scavengers/Thieves ................at 7.30 we met up with a team of scavengers/thieves looking over the wreck trying to work out a way to steal the engines. Then at 9.30 we meet up with another team who were doing exactly the same thing.
We needed security urgently. Or the engine oil and remaining diesel etc., could be released into the Padang2 and Ulu's line up during the ASP WCT contest. If one of these teams started to cut into the wreck to get at the engines and then cut up the engines themselves, Chris assured, there would be considerable volumes of thick oil and diesel released into the ocean. This could possibly make its' way to the contest.
These teams of thieves were coming from the middle lady of the You Know Who.
We had not heard about any release forms being signed. That was the game. Steal everything while still milking the cow. Money ! Money ! Money !
We had no control over these dudes. They were all over the wreck while we were trying to work and getting in the way. They were circling around the wrecks engines etc., like a pack of tiger sharks. Cutting loose anything they could find. Sooner than later one was going to rush in for a kill.
Roles' position was to try to minimize the environmental damage to Padang Padang and Ulu's reefs and beaches etc., and the contest, regardless of who and what was cooking with these naughty people.
What they.................the Water Police, the middle lady, the thieves etc did to the shipwreck was all completely out of our control.........Drag the wreck out to sea, cut it up, steal all the engines etc., etc..
We had submitted our report and plan to the Local and Bali Government, the Tourism Dept, we had the wreck, the reef and rocks in a reason Environmental shape, and the wreck was now secure.
Security was out of our hands............so we did the next best thing........
Phoned and pleaded for some security with muscle...............
I called the Indo Ripcurl GM Jeff and the Rip Surf Contest Manager, Andy. Chris called Wayan Puspa at the Badung Government and Nyoman Sujastra, the Local member for Tourism and the Economy.
This Surf Contest was a major tourist event.
All the above guys said they understood the problem and assured us they would do what they could. It was in their hands now, even thou we will follow up on this.
Role Foundation would now go into maintenance mode with the shipwreck. 2 daily checks and rope tightening and our response team ready to rock and role. We would still be lobbying to control the disposal of the wreck. To make sure there wasn't any further eco-damage.
Chris was extremely frustrated. Nearly 2 weeks of living with the shipwreck, with all the hard work, hype, salvage experts, politics, thieves and journos/press everywhere had taken its toll. He had little or no quality time with his family and very little restful sleep. Plus only one surf all this time.
Donors.................Big thanks to Andy Campbell and Jason Child.
Andy and Jason where the first to donate.
Thanks to Quiksilver, whose major donation has been keeping us afloat until the Coke and Billabong money hopefully comes through on Monday. Who donated what, is up on the Role website. (Shipwreck Funds Received.)
Don't forget, we are trying to purchase water testing equipment, clean up equipment and materials, and organize the political muscle, so we are prepared for the next Surf Environmental Disaster, so it does not turn into a Eco-Crime like this one has.
