Final clearing of the Padang Padang Shipwreck to mark Project Aware’s International Cleanup Day
On Saturday September 20th, Role Foundation returned to Padang Padang beach to complete the cleanup of the Taiwanese fishing boat that had run aground two months previously. The day held particular significance, as it was Project Aware’s International Cleanup Day. An annual volunteer event introduced by the Project AWARE Foundation, the International Cleanup Day serves to highlight how the debris humans generate accumulates and impacts on the world’s marine resources.
With low tide at 7am, the Role team was up early and made their way to Padang Padang beach to remove what was left of the fishing boat. Much of what remained was lodged under rocks and in cracks, wedged in place by the pounding surf. In the end most of it was removed and taken away from the beach for collection, leaving little evidence that the ship was ever there.
The Role team carries a large piece of the ship from the reef area across the beach and up the cliff. With the majority of the boat now broken down and removed from the site it is hoped that the marine environment will make a full recovery.
Having dealt with the shipwreck, Role turned its attention to cleaning up the beach. The high tide mark was covered with flip-flops, bits of plastic and Styrofoam. Not only is this debris unsightly but it is also poses a danger to marine organisms which inadvertently ingest it. The Role team managed to fill 30 rice bags full of rubbish for disposal. It was hard work, particularly carrying the bags up the hill, but after four hours the job was done and the beach was clear of litter. A big thanks to everyone who helped on the day.
On October 20th, three members of the R.O.L.E. Foundation team return to Padang Padang to remove the bags of rubbish and debris collected on the previous visit. This marks the end of what has been a long process but now with little evidence of the ship ever having being there people can once again enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

With 4-5000 villas and houses scheduled to be built over the next 2-3 years, and extremely poor infrastructure some needy Balinese and Indonesians are economically falling behind.
