Introduction
R.O.L.E. Foundation has identified the teaching of vocational skills to poor and/or disadvantaged women as one of the keys to R.O.L.E.’s mission, namely breaking the poverty cycle and reviving a healthy environment. This is supported in the U.N. Millennium Development Goals
In the majority of undeveloped countries a mere 1 in 10 underprivileged women get the opportunity for an education or the job skills necessary to gain financial security and live a comfortable life for themselves, their children and their families.
By teaching skills to women and giving opportunities, R.O.L.E. hopes women in developing countries can live a life free of exploitation; gaining dignity, motivation and self-worth.
Aim
The primary aim of this program is to locate and train illiterate and disadvantaged women to a skills level where they are employable; can go on to a higher education to become a professional; or open a business of their own, with a partnership or with a community group.

Finding the students
R.O.L.E. has identified women who are in need by approaching:
- Local community leaders at the local Banjar or community council
- The Bali Government Education Department
- Local Foundations such as “Mothers without Husbands” (Specifically set up to help local women who have been left pregnant by tourists)
- Work Co-operatives such as the “Geger Beach Seaweed Farmers Association”
- Family groups and individuals through brochures and other forms of direct contact
Entry Requirements:
Program’s entry requirements are:
- Initially the students will be within our catchment area (approximately within a 20 minute radius of our school)
- Must be female
- Having left school before the age of 15 or unemployed at present
- Physically fit
- Assessed as poor or disadvantaged at present, or who may be at risk of slipping into poverty or becoming disadvantaged in the near future.
Courses / Program
Three Courses Daily: 9am-12noon, 1.30pm – 4.30pm and 5pm - 8pm. This allows students to fulfill family and work commitments. (Most students are working in menial jobs, such as gardening, road workers, laborers or non paying family jobs such as collective farming and fishing etc..)
-
Following evaluation the students are broken into two grades; Grade A – Illiterate; and Grade B – Intermediate.
Grade A offers a three month illiteracy course. Students are enrolling for this on a monthly basis. There are 3 of these courses running simultaneously.
-
Grade B offers a one month rotational Intermediate, ‘bridge’ course.
The students are examined on the completion of these courses. They then have the option to stay on and repeat the course - as many times as required to gain the skill level necessary to pass - or to move on to the next grade. After they have passed both the Illiteracy and Intermediate courses, they advance to a three month vocational course.
It is predicted that the illiterate students will take between six to twelve months to advance to the Intermediate Course, and the intermediate students, three to six months to advance to the Three Month Vocational Course.
The students should have the skills required to make it through the 3 month Vocational Course - Grade C. Though they may repeat this course if necessary.
In these first three courses, the participants are actually an amalgamation of two groups of students. The Job Creation/Further Education students (who are generally aged between 15-25 years old) and the Business Development Students (who are generally aged over 25 years old).
